Recordings of a workshop about train music and a workshop featuring women performers, 3 July 1978, at the North Carolina Folklife Festival at West Point on the Eno, Durham, N.C. Performers at the first workshop include the Southern Mountain Boys (bluegrass), Joe "Ten Four" Holley (blues harmonica), and the (Original WBT) Briarhoppers (string band). The women's workshop features Elizabeth "Libba" Cotten (1892-1987) (Piedmont blues guitar), Seena Helms (traditional Anglo-American ballads), the Badgett Sisters (Jubilee style gospel trio), the McDaniels Family (traditional Anglo-American ballads), Algia Mae Hinton (country blues and buck dancing), and Ola Belle Reed (traditional country), all originally from North Carolina. There is a short appearance by L.W. Lambert and the Blue River Boys.

Musician Ola Belle Reed was born in Grassy Creek, N.C. As a teenager, she performed with an early version of the North Carolina Ridge Runners. In 1949, she married Bud Reed. They formed the New River Gang, with Alex Campbell, and operated New River Ranch, a popular country music park near Rising Sun, Md. In the early 1960s, they moved to Sunset Park, Md., and broadcast a weekly show from their store in Oxford, Pa. During the 1970s, Ola Belle Reed and family performed at many folk festivals. ...
